Consistently ranked as one of the leading modern universities in the UK, Plymouth has a strong record of excellence, enterprise and innovation across its teaching and research activities and is distinguished by its long-term engagement with business and the community, playing a key role in civic and regional leadership. In 2012 it celebrated the 150th anniversary of its foundation as a School of Navigation, and in the same year was awarded the Queen?s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, an award underpinned by its marine excellence. 2012 was also distinguished by its shortlisting as University of the Year by Times Higher Education, whose 100 Under 50 league table in 2014 ranked Plymouth 42 in the world. With around 30,000 students, including those studying higher education at its partner colleges throughout the South West, the University is one of largest in the UK. It enjoys a high rate of graduate employment and has recently invested more than ?150 million in its estate and facilities to enhance the student experience and support world-class research. Plymouth has embedded sustainability across its operations, and is the first university in the world to receive the Social Enterprise Mark. It is the largest provider of nursing and healthcare education in the South West, and with the launch of the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry in 2013, becomes the first post-1992 higher education institution to boast its own medical school.
