University Profile
Palacky University Olomouc is the oldest university in Moravia and the second-oldest in the Czech Republic. It was established in 1573 as a public university led by the Jesuit Order in Olomouc.
At first the university only taught theology but has since expanded to eight faculties including philosophy, law, medicine and dentistry, education, science, physical culture and health science. As of 2011 four of the faculties have female deans (theology, law, education and health sciences). The faculty of health sciences is the youngest having been established in 2008.
The faculties are all housed in beautiful historical buildings in Olomouc. However, many of these buildings don’t have enough space and so now the university is investing in building new faculties and research buildings.
The university does not have a faculty of technology as there are three technological universities within about an hour’s drive from Olomouc.
The university has a Science and Technology Park which aims to bridge the gap between the academic-scientific world and private business, to help the university’s research projects work in collaboration with private companies. Special attention is paid to fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology.
The University Press focuses especially on publishing the scientific and research activities of the university. It published worked which are considered too specialised for commercial publishers as well as publishing study books and professional journals.
Students who require additional needs due to a physical disability can contact the Support Centre for Students with Special Needs, which is located in the Faculty of Education main building. Assistance and counselling is available on request.
