Jamia Millia Islamia derives its name from Urdu language in which `Jamia` means University and `Millia` means National. This University, born of the Indian National Movement and patriotic fervour, was founded in response to a call by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. By a special Act of the Parliament, it was made a Central University of India in 1988. University offers 232 programs covering the continua of knowledge disciplines from, Fine Arts, Mass Communication, Humanities, Languages, Social Sciences, Law, Education, Management, Natural Sciences, Dentistry, and Engineering & Technology to Nanotechnology. These programs are offered through 9 Faculties, 38 Departments and 33 Centres. The university has a distinction of offering education from nursery school to doctoral level. It has foreign students from 33 countries. The university supports quality research, evident from funding of more than Rs 280 million for ongoing research project. The university provides well maintained 7 boys hostels and 8 girls hostels, which have a capacity of 1856. The University offers good sports facilities, promotes students participation in sports and extracurricular activities The central library, has a collection of more than 3.7 lac books.
