Since its foundation, HIT has had a strong international flavor. In its first decades, courses at HIT were conducted exclusively in Russian and Japanese. After the reforming and opening to the outside, HIT has a more international influence on the world. Today, HIT has signed academic Copperation agreements of friendship with 151 institutions of higher education in more than 27 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan and Russia. HIT`s Copperation with these universities takes the form of student and faculty exchange programs, joint academic conferences and Copperation in scientific research. In addition, HIT is the exclusive executive branch of International Space University (ISU) in Asia. In 1954, HIT was designated as one of the China’s first six leading universities; in 1984, as one of the China’s fifteen leading institutions; in 1996, as one of the first universities to be included in the Project 211 list; and then in 1999, as one of the top nine key universities to be preferentially built according to the standards of internationally-renowned universities. At present, HIT has been a member of top nine University Union (C9) in China.
