University Profile
With over 100,000 students, South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of the largest universities in the country.
Founded in 1952, in the coastal province of Guangdong, SCUT was the result of an amalgamation of a number of polytechnic universities that existed within the vicinity. Although its initial focus was on engineering and technology, by 1960 it had grown to become one of Chinaโs leading institutions of higher learning. In 1981 it began to offer masterโs and doctoral degrees and became known by its present name from 1988 onwards.
SCUT today is a multidisciplinary university offering programmes in arts, sciences, social sciences and business management.
It is the recipient of a number of different titles and awards, including membership of Project 985 โ Chinaโs prestigious initiative aimed at developing its key universities into world-class institutions.
Located near Chinaโs borders with Hong Kong and Macau, the university is a popular destination for international students with 100 countries represented within the student cohort and partnership agreements in place with over 80 overseas institutions.
SCUT is one of the few universities approved by Chinaโs Ministry Of Education to accept international students on Chinese Government Scholarships.
International students are divided between those taking the Chinese language program and those studying for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Outside of the classroom, students at the university can make the most of the large number of recreational clubs available, including a range of sporting facilities and a university cinema. Student organisations and committees exist for both undergraduates and postgraduates, along with the Student Youth Volunteers Advisory Centre which organises volunteering activities for students in the local community.
