Ain Shams University was founded in July 1950 by Royal Decree, under the name of Ibrahim Pasha’s University. It was the third-oldest native public Egyptian university. Then, the name changed to ‘Ain Shams’ in 1952, the arabic translation of the hieroglyphic word ‘On’ which means Eye of the Sun. Anciently, Prince Ham Oyono is the architect of King Cheops. He studied science and engineering in the On University which located in the same place of Ain shams University today.The main campus of the university is located in the area of the Za’faran Palace (the Palace of Saffron), which was built in 1870, and became the venue of some key events in the history of Egypt. Ain Shams University has eight campuses. Two of them are in front of each other, separated by a main road; all of them are in Greater Cairo. The main campus houses the Administration and Management at the Zaafarana palace,and all Administrative Offices, and Central Library, as well as the faculties of Computer Science, Science, Law and Art. Today, the university includes 14 faculties and 2 high institutes, which are located in seven different campuses in Cairo City, the Capital of Egypt. ASU is the home of about 187,000 undergraduate students and 13500 graduate students who are monitored by about 5945 faculty members, 3200 teaching assistants, and about 26000 personnel. ASU is well known for its high caliber graduates and postgraduates.
