Ranked in the top one per cent of universities in the world (QS World University Rankings), Queen`s University Belfast was founded in 1845 as Queen`s College Belfast, one of three Queen’s Colleges in Ireland. Queen`s became an independent university in 1908. Queen`s is a member of the Russell Group of the UK`s leading research-intensive universities. The University believes the best education happens alongside the best research, and its students enjoy being taught by world-leading academics at the cutting edge of their disciplines. Five consecutive Times Higher Education Awards recognise the spirit of innovation which pervades the University: Excellence and Innovation in the Arts in 2008; UK Entrepreneurial University of the Year in 2009; Outstanding Engineering Research Team of the Year in 2010; Most Innovative Teacher of the Year in 2011 and University Fundraising Team of the Year in 2012. The University was awarded a fifth Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2012, for world-class achievement in cancer research through its leadership of the Northern Ireland Comprehensive Cancer Services programme, which has seen cancer survival rates in Northern Ireland move from the bottom of the UK league table to the top. Queen`s was the first UK university to hold an Athena SWAN institutional Silver award, is one of only two UK universities to hold two Gold awards (Biological Sciences and Psychology), and has more departmental Silver awards than any other university in the UK.
