University Profile
The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) was founded in 1952 during a nationwide reorganisation of higher education systems, which brought together the best departments in the fields of mining, metallurgy and materials from six eminent universities in China, including Beiyang University and Tsinghua University. At that time, USTB was named Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Technology, and in 1988, it got its present name: the University of Science and Technology Beijing. USTB is strong in engineering, especially in materials science and engineering. While engineering is the focus, there are also programmes in basic science, management, humanities, economics and law. After more than half a century of growth, it has developed into one of the most influential key national universities in China, and is one of the first universities in China to establish graduate schools. USTB is part of the 211 project (which is designed to develop 100 first-rate universities in the 21st century), and was selected for the Platform for National Advanced Disciplines Innovation programme in 2006. In 2014 the Collaborative Steel Technology Innovation Center, led by USTB and Northeastern University, was chosen to be a part of the national 2011 Plan. USTB greatly values and will forever cherish its mission of “iron and steel power, prospering the nation” and its long tradition of being “rigorous in learning and research and venerating practice”. As metallurgy and materials science are the two disciplines for which it is most renowned, USTB is also known as “the cradle of iron and steel engineers”. It has so far entered into partnership with more than 140 foreign universities and institutes from different countries and districts, including RWTH Aachen University in Germany, Oakridge National Laboratory in the US, and the University of Oxford in the UK.
