Chulalongkorn University, the oldest and most prestigious university in Thailand, was founded in its present form in 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). It was named after his father, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), who laid the foundations for modern education in Thailand. In keeping with the shared vision of both kings, it has maintained the reputation for academic excellence and has been the pillar of the kingdom ever since. Today, it consists of 19 Faculties and 1 Office, 2 teaching institutes, 3 colleges and 10 institutes with a total enrollment of more than 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It has presented honorary degrees to a number of international dignitaries and heads of state including former US Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton, the late Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, former South African President Nelson R. Mandela and H.M. King Don Juan Carlos de Bourbon of Spain. In QS World University Rankings 2011-2012, it has made a leap up from the 180th to 171st global position (number one in Thailand), it has been ranked 68th for Social Science, 104th for Technology, 78th for Life Science & Biomedicine and 69th for Arts and Humanities.
