The figure โ including bothย main applicants and their dependants โ broke the previous record set at the end of June 2010 whenย 307,394 visas were granted.
In the year ending September 2021, the top five nationalities for visas granted were;ย China withย 135,457, India withย 90,669, Nigeria withย 36,783, the US withย 15,330 and Pakistan withย 14,845. The remaining countries accounted for a further 135,344 granted visas.
Of the top five countries, three saw a three figure percentage increase onย 2019 figures.ย India rose by 197% fromย 30,496,ย Nigeria by 368% fromย 7,860 and Pakistan 225% fromย 4,570.
Additionally, Bangladesh sawย an increase from 1,981 sponsored study grants in 2019 to 10,090 (+410%) in 2021, making it the sixth largest cohort.
The government said possible explanations for the “dramatic increase” included studentsย deferring the start of their courses last year, beginning viaย distance learning and not requiring visas in 2020, in addition to immigration rule changes affecting EU students.
“This could be combined with a further general trend of growth in international students applying for visas to study, as from 2017 until the pandemic there was a strong annual growth in student visas, averaging at approximately 10% per annum over the period,” it said.
The data showed thatย following changes in the immigration rules from January 1, 2021, a total ofย 20,774 sponsored study visa grants were made toย EEA and Swiss students in the first three quarters of the year. This represented 6% of grants for the period.

The sponsorship summary shows that in the year ending September 2021, non-Russell Group institutions had 179,176 applicants for Certificates of Acceptance for Study, compared with 107,638 for the full 2019 year. Likewise, Russell Group universitiesย 145,947 applicants for visas, up from 214,594 in 2019.
In total,ย 356,559 CAS applications were made in the year up toย September 2021.

The statistics also revealed a continued trend of fewerย organisations on the register of sponsors for study. The number fell a further 4% on last year toย 1,097 organisations. In 2010,ย 2,126 organisations wereย on the register of sponsors for study.
