The number of foreign students studying at Irish universities has increased significantly at many institutions since Brexit, new figures show.
The increase offers a financial boost to universities, who can demand much higher fees from international students.
However, Clare Austick, president of the Union of Students in Ireland, said that while foreign students were an important part of the “campus culture” at universities, the increase meant there would be a lower number of places for Irish applicants.
According to provisional admissions figures, almost 17,000 EU students registered at Trinity College Dublin for this academic year, an 8 per cent increase on two years ago. About 3,600 non-EU students are studying at the college this year, an increase of 11 per cent.
