On 12 May 2022, the Government of Western Australia handed down the State’s budget for 2022-23. It includes funding of just over A$40 million to drive the growth of Western Australia’s international education sector in the wake of the pandemic.
The Minister for International Education, David Templeman, said:
International education is an important economic sector for Western Australia and the McGowan Government is strongly committed to supporting the industry as it continues to reconnect with international partners.
According to the Minister “re-engagement of the international education agent network” is a priority area. Overseas education agents who enrol international students in a WA institution will be supported through a $10 million incentive package that will also aim to increase awareness of WA’s international education sector through the agent network.
Research commissioned by StudyPerth estimated that in 2019 – prior to the pandemic – there were just over 53,000 international students studying in Western Australia, who contributed A$2.1 billion to the state’s economy and supported over 12,000 jobs. In 2020, there were international students enrolled at WA education institutions from a total 145 source markets. The five largest source markets for international students in Western Australia captured 46 per cent of total international student enrolments in 2020, while the ten largest source markets captured 64 per cent.
