A crackdown is likely still coming on international students

Just before we broke up for Christmas, new Education Committee Chair Robin Walker used his first meeting between the select committee chairs and the Prime Minister to grill Rishi Sunak on international students. Noting that when he was at the Department for Education (DfE) there had been a little celebration when the sector hit its 600k a year target, Walker asked the PM whether he thought that figure was about right, too few or too many. Sunak said most of the right things – noting the “significant economic and cultural contribution” of international students both to the sector “and indeed…

Toronto: A new record number of Indians received permits to study at Canadian institutions this year but those presuming this will provide a guaranteed pathway to immigration may be in for a jolt of reality.“Promises are being made that these students will be able to graduate and become permanent residents quite easily but again if you look at the number of international students coming in and the programme that typically services them, which is the Canadian Experience Class, there simply is not the room to be able to accommodate all of them,” Ravi Jain, co-founder of the Canadian Immigration Lawyers’…

Rishi Sunak said the UK will always want to recruit the “best and the brightest”. “International students do make a significant economic and cultural contribution to the UK’s higher education sector and indeed the UK. They enrich the university experience for all students,” Rishi Sunak told a committee of MPs on December 20. “The point to recognise is, the target we set of 600,000 was for 2030. We met it several years early and that is a sign of success but obviously it causes one to look at the situation but no one is doubting the contributions that students make to…

International students unemployed and underpaid

Universities Australia – the lobby group for Australia’s 39 largest universities – has lodged a submission with the Albanese Government’s immigration review, which demanded that temporary graduate visas be automatically granted to all international students who complete their study and pass character checks. Why? Because “our global competitors are increasing the number of international graduates in their migration mix in recognition of the significant contribution they make.
