She came to Canada for an education. Desperate for a place to live, she had to rent a room with no door
Parul Yadav saw Canada as a pathway to her future. The 23-year-old, who arrived in Toronto alone but bright-eyed in late 2021, had pored over post-secondary programs around the world from her home in Delhi, India, carefully selecting a public relations course at Humber College for its hands-on learning opportunities. Toronto, she was told, was a multicultural city — one where newcomers like her would be welcomed. What she didn’t expect was a housing crisis, one that would become an ever-present stressor as she began her studies. She struggled, during those first days in a Mississauga hotel, to even book…

Australia’s second-most populous city has released its new framework for international engagement, which sets out seven priority areas for global relationships and recognises the role that the international education sector plays in Melbourne’s economic development. In particular, Melbourne plans to facilitate foreign investment by leveraging diaspora and alumni communities, including international students in Melbourne. This includes “nurturing international student talent, entrepreneurship and leadership skills” as well as improving pathways to employment and establishing life-long relationships with graduates and alumni. The city has yet to provide details of what this entails. Earlier this year, Melbourne ran an Open Innovation Competition among…

Having avoided the “Erasmus contamination” of Brexit and currently benefitting from a huge corporation tax windfall, Ireland is in an enviable position that could provide a “once in a generation” opportunity to invest in education. Simon Harris, minister for further and higher education, research, innovation and science, addressed the QS Higher Education Summit in Dublin. “The focus of the previous strategy was overwhelmingly on attracting inbound students” “The focus of the previous [international education] strategy was overwhelmingly on attracting inbound students. This strategy will not only seek to continue to grow students coming to study in Ireland, but will also…

Ad campaign to show human face of $40b export sector
But those ideas were incorrect, Mr Honeywood said, noting that international students were willing to do the jobs – such as aged care, picking fruit and commercial cleaning – that domestic students refuse to do.And because international students pay full fees, there are no caps on how many places universities can offer, so they do not displace locals, he said.“We wanted to educate the wider community on some of the tangible benefits of having international students,” Mr Honeywood said.International education is Australia’s fourth-highest export industry, generating $40 billion a year, and the largest that does not rely on mining.Among those…
concern remains around student deportations
The letter was signed by some 19 migrant Justice organisations and South Asian diaspora groups from across Canada. Signatories of the letter called for a “definite stop” to the deportations and said the students should not have to bear the burden of proof because of fraud committed by consultants and recruiters. “The burden of proof should not be on the students, the victims of the fraud,” the signatories said. “Receiving deportation orders and the precarity of having to live with a constant threat of being separated from their families and uprooted from their communities and the associated struggle and turmoil…
