UNL is a comprehensive university with nine Academic Units involved in teaching and research in Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Economics and Management, Law, Humanities, Life Sciences and Medicine, including Tropical and Public Health. With more than 19 000 students and 1000 PhD holders in its staff, NOVA aims to be an internationally recognized university based upon an excellent quality in research and teaching, progressively oriented towards 2nd and 3rd cycle education and able to provide high levels of professional success to its students and relevant services to the community. NOVA`s teaching diversity is reflected in almost two hundred programmes ranging from 1st to 3rd cycle. In 2011, more than 2000 students choose NOVA for obtaining their doctorate degree, 13% of which are foreigners. 63% of the research units hosted by NOVA have been evaluated as Excellent or Very Good by international panels. NOVA`s researchers produced more than 1000 publications indexed to Web of Science in 2011; In the period 2004-2010, 50% of NOVA`s publications resulted from international collaboration. The normalized impact of NOVA`s publications in bibliometric databases has been growing steadily and reached the world average in the period 2005-2008. Collaborative R&D projects are carried out at interface institutions that have a large number of partnerships with private and public entities.
