University Profile
Established in 1854 by John Henry Newman, UCD is now ranked among Europe`s leading research-intensive universities. UCD and its graduates have played an unparalleled role in the development of modern Ireland, with many of Irelands leading political, artistic, sporting and professional figures numbered amongst its alumni, including UCD`s most famous graduate James Joyce. UCD today is the University of First Choice for more school leavers than any other Irish university, is the national leader in research funding and has a truly global footprint. Its strong undergraduate degrees in the humanities, social sciences, science and agriculture are complemented by world class professional programmes in medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, law and business (including UCD Smurfit School Irelands leading business school). UCD has Irelands largest cohort of international and postgraduate students, including almost 2,000 PhD students. Working in priority research areas such as health and healthcare delivery, informatics computation and communications, earth and environmental sciences, and global Ireland, UCDs new strategic plan Forming Global Minds places special emphasis on the internationalisation of the student experience through the Erasmus programme and Universitas 21 student mobility programme and on the mainstreaming of innovation as the third pillar of university activity alongside teaching and research.
