Ludhiana: With three Quebec colleges shutting down abruptly and the visas of students being rejected, many students with admission to various colleges in Canada are feeling jittery. Trying to ease their nervousness, MLA Gurpreet Gogi had recently said immigration agents were given an ultimatum to return money to students or give them visas. Now, IDP Education Limited, an international education organisation offering student placement in Canada among other places, has announced that students of those three colleges would be able to commence their studies abroad, by enrolling themselves in another college.
There were almost 600 students from India who had to forego their admission following the closing down of the three colleges. Of which, 140 students had gone through IDP and almost 60 of them have already processed their file with the new college and others are yet to decide.
Jasmeen Singh, area manager, north Punjab at IDP said, โ€œWe have looked beyond legal obligations to understand the circumstances of affected students and their families and developed a comprehensive support package to give students the best chance of securing their future in Canada. Students will be allotted a college named North Western University, including one-year tuition fees, then compensation in the second year. Besides, we will pay for the expenses of IELTS test and embassy fees.โ€
According to him, in the scenario wherein a student does not get the offer for admission from the iinstitution in Alberta or his or her visa application gets rejected, IDP will provide an interim financial assistance to them, which will be equal to the tuition fee amount paid by the students to the colleges.
Talking to TOI, Satnam Kaur and Diksha, students who had taken admission at M College in 2019 said, โ€œThis offer is fine, but it would be better if the money is returned to students and they get to decide whether they want to apply to the other college or not.โ€
