BATHINDA: Punjab governor Banwari Lal Purohit has asked youth to put their technical skills to the service of mankind and the nation, while chief minister Bhagwant Mann has asked them to chase prestigious degrees instead of a 7-band score at IELTS.
At Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University on Saturday, Purohit asked the graduating class to have role models such as former president A P J Abdul Kalam who went into research and teaching. He said: “The country needs a second Green Revolution to increase its food productivity.” After Purohit’s convocation address, Mann also addressed those graduates and postgraduates, saying that creating jobs based on the youth’s liking and expertise will stop brain drain.
The CM said: “Our universities might be producing doctorate holders and specialists but our youth like the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) centres. Because our education system produces only unemployed people, the youth look for greener pastures abroad and make earning 7 band their aim instead of getting prestigious degrees. In the last financial year, nearly 2.75 lakh youth left the country.”
He said: “You are a achiever on the graduation day, in that gown and with that degree, but a struggle from the next day when one has to go begging for jobs. Judge the rate of unemployment by the fact that, sometime ago, 1.25 lakh applied for a post of peon. Even though the qualification was matriculation, the MSc and BTech holders also applied for it. It will be a mental torture, as they are not meant for this menial job.”
Mann called for a new technical education plan to produce employable people and a new business environment that attracted talent from well-off countries. He sought unique business ideas, citing the example of how the toothpaste industry increased the consumption of its product by just making the tube’s mouth a fraction wider. Calling for faith in Indian democracy, he contrasted it with Pakistan, saying: “You won’t find ex-prime ministers in Pakistan. They were either killed or ousted.”
